Introduction: Organ transplant is the only treatment for patients with organ failure that could increase their life expectancy and quality of life. Willingness to organ donation varies based on different customs and traditions, cultural and religious beliefs and the knowledge and attitude of people from different regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of the residents of Sanandaj towards organ donation.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 residents from the general population of Sanandaj city, Iran, who were selected through convenient sampling in 2016. Data were collected using the Dasgupta knowledge and attitude questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the PASW software through descriptive and inferential statistics. The significance level was set at 0.05 for all the statistical tests.
Results: The mean scores of knowledge and attitude were 9.96 ± 3.55 and 13.36 ± 3.71, respectively. Results showed that knowledge and attitude towards organ donation had a relation with the educational level, job and the source of information, in a way that the most desirable level of knowledge and attitude was observed among people with high school and college degrees, employees and those who received their information from different media. Respectively, the level of knowledge and attitude in people with high school to diploma degrees was 18.9 and 9 times more than others, with college degrees was 12.7 and 5 times and in employees was 3 and 2 times more than others. Also, the levels of knowledge and attitude among people who gained their information about organ donation from television and newspaper were respectively 6.5 and 2.4 times and 4.5 and 1.9 times more than others.
Conclusions: People of Sanandaj city had a fairly good knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation. Considering the cultural, religious and social characteristics of people, their knowledge and attitude towards organ donation could be improved by planning appropriate programs through different media.
