Introduction: Background and Objective: Obesity is considered one of the most important health challenges in all societies worldwide, which, in addition to physical problems, increases psychological problems, especially in women. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of emotion-focused therapy on feelings of shame and body image concerns in obese women.
Methods: This study was quasi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population included all obese women in Tehran province who had referred to weight loss centers in 1402. Thirty people who met the inclusion criteria were selected using convenience sampling and assigned to two experimental and control groups by simple randomization. In order to collect data, the shame questionnaire of Cohen et al. (2011) and the body image concerns of Littleton (2005) were used. Multivariate analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data using SPSS-27 software.
Result: The results of the analysis of covariance showed that the scores of shame and body image concerns in the experimental group in the post-test decreased compared to the pre-test (P<0.05). There was a significant difference between the scores of shame and body image concerns in the experimental and control groups in the post-test.
Conclusion: It can be said that emotion-focused therapy was able to effectively improve the feelings of shame and body image concerns in obese women. Therefore, mental health professionals are advised to use this approach to treat psychological problems such as shame and feelings of unattractiveness in obese people.
