Introduction: Obesity is one of the major problems of developing societies that harms the psychological and emotional processes of people, so the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of schema therapy in regulating emotions and body mass index of obese women.
Methods: The present study was a semi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group with a three-month follow-up period. The statistical population included all women suffering from obesity who referred to the obesity treatment center of Rasoul Akram Hospital (PBUH) in Tehran in 2019; Among the qualified people who volunteered to cooperate, 30 people were selected by purposeful sampling accident and randomly replaced in two control and intervention groups (15 people in each group). The research instrument was Gross and John's emotional regulation scale. The intervention group participated in eight sessions of Yang et al. schema therapy, but the control group did not receive any intervention and were placed on the waiting list for treatment. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance test with repeated measures and SPSS-24 software.
Results: The results showed that the intervention and control groups had significant differences in emotion regulation and body mass index. In other words, schema therapy improved emotion regulation and body mass index in obese women (p<0.001). And these results continued in the follow-up period.
Conclusion: Based on the results, schema therapy can be used as a complementary treatment method along with other treatment methods in order to improve emotional regulation and body mass index.
