Introduction: The importance of rehabilitation for the family caregivers of hemodialysis patients is no less than for the patients themselves, and the first step for the rehabilitation of this group is to measure the effects, consequences, and problems caused by patient care on them. This study aimed to assess care burden and demoralization among family caregivers of hemodialysis patients.
Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on the family caregivers of hemodialysis patients referred to the hemodialysis center of selected medical-educational centers of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences in 2023. Based on the inclusion criteria, 180 family caregivers were selected using census sampling. In order to collect data, the demographic profile of patients and caregivers, Zarit's care burden questionnaires, and Kisan's demoralization were used. In order to analyze the data, SPSS22 software was used.
Results: The mean score of care burden of the caregivers in the study was 49.17±12.42. The care burden level of most researched units (73.3%) was moderate to severe. The mean score of demoralization was 18.41±4.45, and it was severe. Most of the research units (71.1 percent) had symptoms of severe demoralization. The care load of the research units had a statistically significant relationship with gender, marital status, education, relationship with the patient, duration of patient care in 24 hours, and years of patient care (P<0.05). The demoralization of the studied units had a significant relationship with gender, marital status, relationship with the patient, duration of patient care in 24 hours, and years of patient care (P<0.001).
Conclusion: The burden of care in the family caregivers of hemodialysis patients is at a moderate to high level, and the symptoms of low morale are severe. Considering the importance of the issue, this group of caregivers is expected to be considered in terms of psychological complications caused by patient care. These frequent complications should benefit from appropriate interventions such as counseling by psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and clinical psychologists.
