Introduction: The present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of reality therapy based on choice theory on the feelings of loneliness and psychological security of people with physical-motor disabilities. The present study design was a semi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group and a one-month follow-up.
Methods: The statistical population of the study included all people with physical-motor disabilities in the welfare organization of Sari city. Of those who met the inclusion criteria for the study, 30 people were selected and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (15 people in each group). Initially, a pre-test was administered to both groups, and then the experimental group received eight 90-minute sessions of reality therapy training based on choice theory in a group setting. Finally, a post-test was administered to both groups, and after one month, a follow-up test was administered to ensure the results. Data collection tools included Russell's Loneliness Scale (1996) and Zare and Aminpour's Psychological Security Questionnaire (2011). A repeated-measures analysis of variance and SPSS version 22 software were used to analyze the data.
Result: The results showed that group-based reality therapy training based on choice theory had a significant effect on reducing loneliness (P=0.000) and increasing psychological security (P=0.000) in physically and mentally disabled people, and its effect was maintained until the end of the one-month follow-up period, respectively.
Conclusion: Considering the effect of reality therapy training based on choice theory on reducing loneliness and increasing psychological security in physically and mentally disabled people, it is suggested that psychologists and counselors consider the issue of loneliness and psychological security in disabled people, as reducing loneliness and increasing psychological security in disabled people provides the basis for increasing their participation in society and their enjoyment of human rights and equal opportunities at the community level.
