Introduction: Psychosomatic problems are one of the common psychiatric disorders in working children. The aim of the present study was to investigate the modeling of psychosomatic complaints based on maltreatment and psychological distress, mediated by social support, among working children.
Methods: The present study was a correlational study using structural equation modeling. The statistical population included all children who had a file as child laborers in the Welfare Organization of the cities of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province in the year 1403. From this population, 300 individuals were selected using purposive sampling and completed the Takata and Sakata Psychosomatic Complaints Scale (2004), McCord et al.'s Maltreatment Questionnaire (2018), Zimet et al.'s Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (1998), and Chen et al.'s Safety Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (2001). The research data were analyzed using AMOS-24 and SPSS-26 software.
Results: The results indicated a good fit of the model with the empirical data. The effect of the direct standardized path coefficient of maltreatment, psychological distress, and social support on psychosomatic complaints was significant (p < 0.05). Also, the indirect effect of maltreatment and psychological distress, with the mediating role of social support, on psychosomatic complaints was also significant (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that maltreatment, psychological distress, and social support play a role in the occurrence of psychosomatic complaints in working children, indicating that this psychiatric disorder is multidimensional. All health professionals, especially psychologists and psychiatrists, are advised to consider the effective role of social support in providing mental health services to these children.
