Introduction: hospitalization of patients at the Cardiac surgery intensive care unit creates high levels of stress in their families. In recent years promotion of family satisfaction through nursing interventions such as development and implementation of consultation programs is more emphasized. The current study was conducted to determine the effect of nursing consultation on satisfaction of patients' families at the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Units. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study, fifty four family members of patients admitted at the Cardiac Surgery intensive care unit of Kurdkoy hospital Golestan-Iran, were selected by convenience sampling method and were sequentially allocated into intervention and control groups. Nursing Consultation program was carried out for the intervention group during multiple sessions based on the assessed informational needs of the family from the time of admission until discharge of their patients from the hospital. The control group received only routine information during hospital stay. The data collection tools were demographic and Satisfaction of received information questionnaires .Data was analyzed with chi-square and t- tests using SPSS (v. 16) software. Results: The results showed that the two groups had similar demographic characteristics. The mean satisfaction from information in intervention and control groups were 73.54±9.72 and 53.78±4.34 respectively and this difference was statistically significant, So the intervention group was more satisfied from received information (P<0.01). Conclusion: Nursing consultation was an effective intervention to improved satisfaction of patients' families at the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit in our study.
