Introduction: Psychological well-being is an important factor that plays an effective role in improving many psychological characteristics. Therefore, planning to design treatment protocols to improve and promote psychological well-being is essential. As a result, the present research aimed to determine the effectiveness of a combined protocol of dialectical behavior therapy and compassion-based therapy on psychological well-being.
Methods: The present research was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The population of this study was undergraduate counseling students of Islamic Azad University of Mashhad Branch in the 2023-4 academic year, of whom 40 were selected by purposive sampling and simple random sampling with the help of a lottery, and assigned to two equal groups. The experimental group underwent 10 sessions of 90 minutes of a combined protocol of dialectical behavior therapy and compassion-based therapy. During this period, the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were collected using a demographic information form and a psychological well-being scale (Ryff, 2002) and analyzed using a multivariate analysis of covariance method in SPSS version 24.
Results: The findings of the present research showed a significant difference between the experimental and control group students in terms of psychological well-being and all its components, including autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance. In other words, the combined protocol of dialectical behavior therapy and compassion-based therapy significantly increased psychological well-being and all its components in students (P<0.001).
Conclusions: According to the present research results, a combined protocol of dialectical behavior therapy and compassion-based therapy, along with other treatment protocols, plays an important and effective role in improving psychological characteristics, including psychological well-being.
