Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis has widespread effects on patients' quality of life and emotional regulation, highlighting the need for effective psychological interventions. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of positive psychology-based therapy on quality of life and emotional dysregulation in patients with MS.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group and follow-up. The statistical population consisted of Multiple Sclerosis patients in Tehran who were members of the Iranian MS Society or referred to neurology clinics in the second half of 2023, with a confirmed diagnosis by a neurologist. Thirty eligible participants were selected via purposive sampling and randomly assigned (by lottery) to either an experimental group (n=15) or a control group (n=15). Data collection tools included the World Health Organisation Quality of Life Questionnaire (1996) and the Gratz and Roemer Emotional Dysregulation Scale (2004). The intervention group received ten 90-minute group sessions over two months, while the control group received routine care. Data were analysed using SPSS 22 and a repeated-measures ANOVA, and the assumptions were met.
Results: The findings revealed significant differences in the posttest and follow-up stages between the mean scores for quality of life and emotional dysregulation and the pretest (p<0.01), with effects sustained through follow-up. Thus, positive psychology-based therapy improved quality of life and emotional dysregulation in MS patients.
Conclusion: Given the efficacy of positive psychology-based therapy in enhancing quality of life and emotional regulation in patients with Multiple Sclerosis, it is recommended that this intervention be integrated into comprehensive rehabilitation and care programs in clinical and specialised treatment centres.
