Introduction: Psychosomatic patients face many challenges in terms of health worries and health-promoting lifestyles. Therefore, the present research aimed to determine the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy on health worry and health-promoting lifestyles in psychosomatic patients with migraine.
Methods: The present research employed a purposive, quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, and a control group. The research population was psychosomatic patients with migraine who were referred to the psychiatric clinics of Ahvaz city in 2024. After reviewing the inclusion criteria, 40 people were selected as a sample using a purposive sampling method and simple random sampling with lottery replacement, and divided into two equal groups. The experimental group underwent 10 sessions of 60 minutes of acceptance and commitment therapy, and the control group remained on the waiting list for therapy. The present research tools included the Health Worries Questionnaire and the Health Promoting Lifestyles Questionnaire. The data in this study were analysed using chi-square and multivariate analysis of covariance in SPSS-25.
Results: The findings showed that there was no significant difference in gender, education and age between psychosomatic patients with migraine in the experimental and control groups (P>0.05). Also, acceptance and commitment therapy reduced health worry and increased health-promoting lifestyles in psychosomatic patients with migraine (P<0.001).
Conclusions: According to the results of this study, health professionals and therapists can use acceptance and commitment therapy alongside other therapeutic methods to improve psychological characteristics, especially by reducing health worry and increasing health-promoting lifestyles.
