Introduction: Asthma remains a major public health concern in most parts of the world, and its diagnosis and management continue to pose significant challenges. Given that multiple factors contribute to the rising prevalence of asthma, greater clinical and research attention to this patient population is warranted.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design with a control group and a follow-up period. The statistical population comprised all patients with asthma who were referred to the Asthma and Allergy Clinic in Karaj during the second half of 2025 and received a confirmed diagnosis from a specialist physician. The research sample consisted of 40 men and women with asthma, selected through purposive sampling and then randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. Data were collected using the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale and the Medication Adherence Questionnaire. The experimental group received a motivational interviewing intervention, while the control group was placed on a waiting list and received no intervention during this period. Data were analyzed in SPSS version 24 using repeated measures analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test, following verification of the relevant statistical assumptions.
Result: In the motivational interviewing group, statistically significant differences were found between mean scores of medication adherence and health locus of control at the pre-test stage compared with both the post-test and follow-up stages (p < 0.05). Comparison of mean scores across the three time points revealed increases in chance locus of control, powerful others locus of control, internal locus of control, and medication adherence scores. The difference between post-test and follow-up scores was not statistically significant (p > 0.05), indicating that the treatment effects were maintained over time.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that motivational interviewing can serve as an effective approach for improving health locus of control and medication adherence in patients with asthma, with the potential to yield meaningful health benefits for this population.
