Introduction: Marital conflict is associated with many negative individual and social consequences, and it is essential to identify the factors and effective interventions to improve it. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy on cognitive fusion and cognitive avoidance in women with marital problems.
Method: The current research was semi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population included women from the Tolo Salamat Psychological Center in Tehran. Among them, 32 women who scored less than 101 on the Spanier marital adjustment scale were selected and were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The following week, the cognitive behavioral therapy program was implemented in the experimental group, and the control group was not subjected to any therapy program. Before and after the treatment sessions, both groups answered the questions. Data collection tools were the Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Cognitive Avoidance Questionnaire, and Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire. The data was analyzed using SPSS-21 software and through multivariate analysis of the covariance test.
Result: The results showed that after cognitive behavioral therapy, the scores of cognitive fusion and cognitive avoidance in the experimental group significantly changed compared to the control group. The group's effect size on cognitive fusion and avoidance variables was 46% and 59%, respectively.
Conclusion: The results show that cognitive behavioral therapy can effectively improve cognitive fusion and cognitive avoidance in designing programs to improve family health and couples' relationships.
