Introduction: Couples seeking divorce may face challenges related to their sense of coherence and psychological distress. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of psychological well-being-based couple therapy in improving sense of coherence and reducing psychological distress among couples seeking divorce.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The study population consisted of couples seeking divorce who were referred to counseling and psychological services in Ahvaz in 2025. A total of 16 couples per group were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two equal groups using simple lottery-based allocation. The experimental group received twelve 60-minute sessions of psychological well-being-based couple therapy (three sessions per week), while the control group remained on a waiting list. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Sense of Coherence Scale, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) in SPSS version 25.
Results: No statistically significant differences were observed between the experimental and control groups in terms of husbands' educational level, wives' educational level, or duration of marriage (P > 0.05). Compared with the control group, psychological well-being-based couple therapy significantly increased sense of coherence and reduced psychological distress among couples seeking divorce (P < 0.001).
Conclusions: Psychological well-being-based couple therapy may help improve sense of coherence and reduce psychological distress among couples seeking divorce.
