Introduction: Violence against women by their spouses is a major public health concern encompassing physical, psychological, and sexual abuse. Rates of violence are higher among men with substance use disorders. This study examined the mediating role of perfectionism in the relationship between forgiveness, resilience, and violence against women whose spouses suffer from substance use disorders.
Methods: This applied, descriptive-correlational study was conducted in 1403 among women in Mashhad whose spouses had substance use disorders. Using convenience sampling, 165 eligible women participated. Data were collected using the Forgiveness Scale, the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale, the Resilience Scale, and the Violence Against Women Questionnaire. Data were analysed using SPSS and LISREL.
Results: Perfectionism directly predicted violence against women (p<0.01, β=0.18), indicating that higher perfectionism was associated with greater violence. Resilience (p<0.05, β=-0.10) and forgiveness (p<0.05, β=0.08) indirectly affected violence through perfectionism. Higher resilience and forgiveness were associated with lower perfectionism, which in turn reduced violence. Both resilience (p < 0.01, β = -0.50) and forgiveness (p < 0.01, β = -0.41) significantly and negatively predicted perfectionism.
Conclusion: Increasing forgiveness and resilience in women with spouses who have substance use disorders may reduce perfectionism and consequently decrease exposure to violence. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening psychological resources such as forgiveness and resilience in social and educational interventions aimed at reducing violence and improving marital relationships in this population.
