Introduction: Obesity and overweight are one of disorders affecting eating behavior during adolescence. Therefore, the present research was conducted to predict eating behavior based on both body image concerns and health anxiety in obese and overweight adolescent girls.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional correlational study. The research population consisted of all obese and overweight female students in senior high schools of Chalus county in the 2024-2025 academic year, from which 200 participants were selected as the sample using a purposive sampling method. The instruments used in the present study included a demographic information form, the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (Van Strien et al., 1986), the Body Image Concern Inventory (Littleton et al., 2005), and the Health Anxiety Inventory (Salkovskis et al., 2002). The data from this research were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with the enter model in SPSS-25 software.
Results: The findings showed a positive and significant correlation between body image concerns and health anxiety with eating behavior in obese and overweight adolescent girls (P<0.001). Additionally, the variables of body image concerns and health anxiety significantly predicted 32% of the variance in their eating behavior, with health anxiety contributing more than body image concerns (P<0.05).
Conclusions: According to the findings, to reduce undesirable eating behaviors, educational workshops could be implemented to address body image concerns and health anxiety
