Introduction: In today's world, addiction to computer games is common and has many negative psychological consequences. This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of training control over computer games and schema therapy on mood and anxiety symptoms in adolescents addicted to computer games.
Methods: The present research was a semi-experimental design with a pretest, posttest, and 2-month follow-up, with a control group. The population of the present study was adolescent girls addicted to computer games who referred to the education counselling centres of Mashhad city in the 2024-2025 academic year. The sample comprised 45 people (three groups of 15), selected after review of the inclusion criteria using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected using the computer game questionnaire and the mood and anxiety symptoms questionnaire. The first experimental group underwent 10 sessions of 45 minutes under training control over computer game addiction. The second experimental group underwent 10 45-minute sessions of schema therapy (two sessions per week). During this time, the control group received no intervention. Data were analysed using repeated-measures analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test in SPSS-26.
Results: The findings showed that both methods of training control over computer game addiction and schema therapy decreased mood and anxiety symptoms in adolescents addicted to computer games. The results were maintained at the follow-up stage (P<0.001). In addition, the difference between the methods of training control over computer game addiction and schema therapy in decreasing mood and anxiety symptoms in adolescents addicted to computer games was not significant (P>0.05).
