Abstract: (203 Views)
Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common autoimmune neurological diseases and causes motor and functional disability in humans at different ages. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two treatments: eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing and positive psychotherapy in MS patients in Qazvin.
Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, and 3-month follow-up, including a control group. The statistical population comprised all patients referred to Bu-Ali Sina Hospital in Qazvin in 2025. Using available and purposive sampling, 45 patients diagnosed with MS were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and a control group, with single-blinded randomisation. Participants were treated and educated in psychotherapy sessions in 8 two-hour sessions. All subjects were assessed at three stages: pre-test, post-test, and follow-up, using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the MS Patient Quality of Life Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the covariance statistical method.
Results: It was shown that both EMDR and positive psychotherapy significantly reduced depression and improved quality of life in people with MS in both sexes (men and women); however, the results of the follow-up test showed that EMDR intervention had a greater effect than positive psychotherapy in reducing depression and increasing quality of life in both sexes.
Conclusions: Given the positive effect of EMDR and positive psychotherapy on reducing depressive symptoms and improving quality of life in patients with MS and their continued effectiveness in the three-month follow-up of patients, the use of these treatment methods is necessary and recommended at all levels of prevention and treatment of patients with physical and mental diseases.
